If you own or use a VHF marine radio, then it is a legal requirement to have an 'Authority to Operate', or to be supervised by someone who does. There are also several reasons for using a VHF as your primary form of safety communication:
- Mobile 'phone networks are unreliable at sea
- You can only can only call one number with a 'phone, and therefore surrounding vessels will be unaware of your circumstances
- Modern DSC VHF radios can transmit position with distress message (when connected to GPS)
- The rescue services can obtain a bearing of VHF signals
- It is HM Coastguard's preferred method of communication.
Our courses are conducted using Simrad RD68T VHF simulators, to enable practice of all voice procedures and DSC functions.
*Students of under sixteen are welcome to undertake the course, but not legally elligible for the 'Authority to Operate'.
As a recognised RYA Training Centre for the RYA Powerboat Scheme and RYA (VHF) SRC Training, we offer quality courses as standard.
"By taking your course at an RYA Recognised Training Centre you can expect to be taught by an experienced, qualified instructor on seaworthy boats with a maximum of six trainees (depending on the level of course). Courses can be taken either onboard a centre’s boat or your own boat."
